Abstract
Copy of a handwritten letter to Charles H. Marshall from Captain Thomas Melville, stating that he is replying to Marshall's inquiry about the "colored" inmates of Sailors' Snug Harbor. He states that Isaac [Isaiah?] Hunter was the first admitted after the Snug Harbor was opened to colored inmates on August 1, 1833. Hunter was born in Winchester, Virginia. Melville states that the second colored inmate was admitted in September 1842, the next in August 1843, and that there have been over one hundred admitted since.
