Abstract
Handwritten letter from inmate James E. Cole to Captain Thomas Melville regarding an incident that occurred between Cole and Bill Crown. On October 11, Cole claims that Crown had him arrested for assault and battery, which Cole denies having done. Cole mentions Dan Wickes [could this be Daniel Wicks?], Henry Baker, and "an outsider," Bill Gannon, who swore that Cole struck at Crown's face. Cole believes the incident was an outrage, accuses Crown of having spit at him, and is upset that Crown has not been censured for his behavior while Cole has had to get a bond to stay out of Richmond.
