Handwritten letter to Captain Thomas Melville, regarding the bearer, John McLaughlin, who is seeking to gain admission to Sailors' Snug Harbor. The author writes that he has served with McLaughlin aboard ship [the S. S. Milton?] for some years and he is a "sober [and] worthy man". The author's name is difficult to read, perhaps "E. L.[?] Goodwin", written by U. W. Pentz [?].
The collection is on permanent loan at the Stephen B. Luce Library of SUNY Maritime College. The Sailors' Snug Harbor records are the Property of the Trustees of the Sailors’ Snug Harbor.
