Handwritten letters from John S. [Simpkins] Butler, of Retreat for the Insane at Hartford, and F. M. Robertson, M.D., to Dr. S. V. R. Bogert [Stephen Van Rensselaer Bogart], physician, Sailors' Snug Harbor, regarding the state and future of a man named J. [Joseph] R. Wilson, an inmate at Sailors' Snug Harbor. In the first letter, Butler writes regarding the limits and terms of admission to the Retreat for the Insane at Hartford. In the second letter, Robertson writes regarding his relation to Wilson and relays all the information he knows about Wilson's past, including the fact that Wilson's mother was the niece of Robertson's wife and that Wilson has resided in Atlanta, Georgia, and visited Savannah, then Charleston, where he met with the Reverend W.
