Abstract

Handwritten letter from J. [John] B. Tullock, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, regarding belongings that went missing during his stay at the asylum [New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica], including a tract that he wrote, titled "Man's Drink," his American naturalization papers, and various compositions and correspondence. He mentions having asked Dr. Bogart [Stephen Van Rensselaer Bogart] to take care of his belongings. He blames Mr. [Joseph K.] Clark, the steward, for his missing belongings. Tullock also mentions where he was born, Shetland, and gives an account of his naturalization, as he wants his naturalization papers as proof of his ability to vote, explaining that he wishes to vote for [Grover] Cleveland. He also discusses his feelings about the Democratic party and the upcoming presidential election. Tullock asks Trask to compel the steward to return his belongings.

The letter consists of one wide piece of paper, folded in half, with a half-size single sheet insert.
