Abstract
Handwritten letter from James E. Cole, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to the governor, in response to a letter of the evening before from the governor that had directed him to Section 18 of the Bylaws, regarding working outside. Cole explains that Mr. Soutter's coachman has been kind to him and therefore, when the man asked Cole to feed his wife's canaries while they were away, Cole was happy to do so. Received while Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask was the governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor.
