Abstract

Handwritten letter from John Nelson, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, residing in Morris Plains, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, requesting permission to return to the Harbor. He states that he is in good health and that if Trask does not give him permission, he willingly will give up his right to reside at Sailors' Snug Harbor and "be returned to my native country." [Cataloger's note: While the letter does not state that the writer is housed in the New Jersey State Asylum, the location implies that this may be the case.]
