Abstract

Handwritten letter from Amos Johnson, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, making a complaint against Mr. Charles Shelldon [sic] and Mr. Mayo. He states that Mayo used "obscene and vulgar Language" and when he informed Shelton of the fact, Shelton and Mayo then banded together to make Johnson as uncomfortable as possible at the dining table going forward. He explains that they stack dirty dishes in front of him at the table and states that he told Mr. Taylor about this incident. He then describes several more incidents and refers Trask to fellow inmates Mr.  Buttler [sic? Samuel Butler?], Mr. [Thomas?] Gray, and No. 501, whose name he does not remember. He thinks that Mr. Edwards will vouch for his account of Mayo's general conduct.
