Abstract
Memoir of Northrop's first sea journey at age 18 aboard the SS Santa Paula. Also titled "Before the Mast to the West Coast." Manuscript is 32 pages. Narrative starts two days out from New York, bound for the West Coast of South America through the Panama Canal. On the first page Northrop notes that "Every boy wants to go to sea at sometime, especially after reading sea tales like Dana's 'Two Years Before the Mast'."
