Abstract
Handwritten letter from James E. Cole [presumably the inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor of the same name?], with mail duty at Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Thomas Melville. Cole is upset that there is an individual at Sailors' Snug Harbor "running an opposition mail" and mis-delivering letters. Cole, clearly upset, complains about "Down Easters" with poor character at Sailors' Snug Harbor and states that he is glad to hear that Melville was not aware of the fact that another individual was performing mail duty, as he feels that it would be an insult if Melville were aware that the second individual was performing a portion of Cole's tasks without reprimand.
