Abstract

Handwritten letter from John W. [Whetten] Ehninger, to Captain Thomas Melville, regarding Ehninger's offer to paint a portrait of the late Captain De Peyster, [who was a previous Governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor], for the institution. In the letter, Ehninger writes that he recently painted the portrait of Charles Anthon for Columbia College. He ends the letter by offering to have the board of trustees of Sailor's Snug Harbor personally view his portrait of Charles Anthon.
