Abstract
Handwritten letter from Fred W. Williams, gateman of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Thomas Melville, regarding the enforcement of the taboo, [a term used to reference things inmates were not supposed to do], of being excessively drunk, especially outside the gates of the institution. Williams describes his experiences with drunk inmates and his concern about them being outside of the community while drunk. He implores Melville to take action and enforce better security at the gates of the institution.
