Handwritten letter from Samuel Grayson, inmate, Sailor's Snug Harbor to Captain Thomas Melville, regarding a unpleasant encounter with the east gate keeper. Grayson states that he has been at the Harbor since 1853 and this was the first time he has ever been stopped by a gate keeper. Grayson describes how the gate keeper insulted him, and asks Melville to take action to remedy the situation. [Cataloger's note: The letter is undated but is filed in the 1873 folder.]
