Handwritten letter from George A. Downing, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor residing at the Sailors' Snug Harbor Hospital, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask regarding an incident he claims occurred between a man "they call Martin, a black man" and himself. He claims Martin threatened him and names several witnesses to the argument. Below the letter is a notation from October 16, 1886, with notes on what was said by each of these witnesses, including John Freeman, Thomas Davis, Joseph Evans, and Charles Pierson. [Cataloger's note: The letter is undated but the filing notation states that the date was October 10.]
