Abstract
Two handwritten letters to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor, written on the same piece of paper and regarding Daniel Griffin, inmate of the Harbor residing in South Portland, Maine. The first letter is from Griffin to Trask explaining that he is weak and needs an extra four months of leave. The second letter is from Griffin's daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charles D. Griffin, explaining that the growth on Griffin's lip that he blames for his condition is cancerous but that they have not let him know, in case it would affect his spirits.
