Abstract

Handwritten letter from Frederick Ernst, of the National Military Home in Ohio, to the governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor, writing at the suggestion of Mr. F. Alexander, Superintendent of the Sailors' Home in New York, to ask for information about a man who calls himself Reverend William H. Garland. Garland claims that he is a Baptist preacher who was a chaplain and librarian at a sailors' home but Ernst believes him a fraud, not least because of an incident where Garland held a loaded revolver to Ernst's head and threatened to shoot him. Ernst asks the governor to provide him with any information he might have on Garland, so that Ernst can show it to the officers of the National Military Home.
