Identifier
SC-0016-I-D-1-B-262Abstract
Pair of handwritten letters from John P. Wilkinson, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor. The first letter is to Dr. H. D. [Henry DeWitt] Joy, acting governor of the Harbor, dated August 10, 1889. Wilkinson explains that approximately a year before, he spoke with an inmate who goes by the name of "Dandy Jim", who was holding a small boat in his hand. Wilkinson told Dandy Jim that he knew a man in South Brooklyn who would probably buy the boat, so Dandy Jim asked Wilkinson to take some to him. When Wilkinson did not do this as quickly as Dandy Jim wanted, he insulted Wilkinson and continues to do so. Wilkinson recounts a recent encounter when he was speaking to Captain [Langtry W.] Savage and overheard Dandy Jim impugning him to Wilkinson's roommate, Nate Seymore. Wilkinson mentions that he had previously told Captain [John J.] Blackstock about the problem. In the second letter, to Governor Gustavus D. S. Trask, Wilkinson gives the same story about Dandy Jim and states that a "man by the name of Nichols" had been with him during a recent incident. He asks for Trask's intervention.Type Of Resource
