Abstract
Several notes and a letter pertaining to the death and effects of the late James E. Cole, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor. A letter to Dr. H. D. [Henry DeWitt] Joy explains that Cole had been visiting the writer and borrowed a black velvet shawl to wear against the cold and asks for the return of the item. A related note from Dr. Joy states that Cole was not seen wearing such a shawl. A third slip of paper gives the address of Mary Cole, James Cole's widow, a fourth slip (perhaps in James Cole's own hand?] states that there is a watch that the writer wants to give the recipient, and a fifth slip has the name and address of Mrs. M. Shields. Presumably received while Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask was the governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor. [Cataloger's note: The notes are undated and the letter has a notation with the name of Mr. Joe Brackley but the letter is signed by Mrs. M. Shields. The group of papers is filed in the Jan-Jun 1890 folder.]
