Abstract

Handwritten letter from Benjamin L. Grant, former inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, stating that he has submitted an application for readmission but acknowledging that he is unlikely to get it without the recipient's [Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask?] consent. He asks forgiveness for his remarks and explains that he is in much worth health than previously, having been injured after shipping out on the bark Ben Avon bound for Calcutta the previous year. He then returned to Hamburg aboard the Ellesmere, which loaded in Philadelphia and paid his passage to New York on a steamer [Galert?]. He asks the recipient's mercy. Received while Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask was the governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor.
