Handwritten letter from Robert W. James, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, explaining that his brother-in-law lent him an overcoat and asking permission to go out of the gate so that James can send it back to him. Included with the letter is a signed statement by E. C. Packer of New Bedford, presumably James's brother-in-law, dated November 23, asking Trask to grant James permission to send Packer back his overcoat.
