Letter to the Superintendent of Sailors' Snug Harbor from E. H. Hart, January 10, 1883
Identifier
SC-0016-III-A-1-0271Abstract
Handwritten letter from E. H. Hart, of Federal Point, Florida, to the Superintendent of Sailors' Snug Harbor, asking if Captain Sam Whiting, who died of suicide the previous year [1882] left any papers or journals. Hart is interested in them because Hart's father, Benjamin H. Hart, was a relative of Whiting and sailed with him on what was their first voyage, on the McClellan, in approximately 1830. Received while Captain Thomas Melville was governor of Sailors' Snug Harbor. [Cataloger's note: The letter is dated January 10, 1882, but the notation on the back corrects this to 1883 and, as Whiting died in 1882, the letter is presumably from 1883.]Type Of Resource
