Handwritten letter from John L. Stull, inmate of Sailors' Snug Harbor, to Captain Gustavus D. S. Trask, requesting that Trask appoint a back-up person to staff the west gate in case Stull is ill or otherwise unable to work. Stull also mentions having requested leave to visit his sick son in Brooklyn, with cover by Mr. [Thomas] Cufflin and says that he was told Trask did not approve. He asks Trask's permission to be able to make the visit.
